Storage, measured for small homes

Many city homes are small. A one-bedroom flat of 400 square feet — about 37 m² — is normal in Hong Kong, and not unusual in Copenhagen, Berlin, Stockholm or London. In a home that size, a cupboard is not the answer. The answer is the space that is already there and is not being used: the 16 cm under a low bed, the back of a door, the strip of wall above the kitchen counter, the top of the wardrobe.

Why we measure everything

A drawer that is 1 cm too tall is useless. So every product page starts with numbers, not adjectives:

• The real size of the product — width × depth × height, in centimetres or inches. Sets show the size of each piece.
• The gap it needs — clearance under the bed, door thickness, wall width or shelf height.
• The footprint — the floor or wall area it occupies, worked out from its size.
• Capacity and maximum load, where they apply.

Our gap finder on the home page uses the same figures: tell it the height under your bed and it shows only what fits, with room to spare.
